TMS Treatment

Every connection matters.
Depression occurs when vital areas of the brain become less active. TMS therapy rewires neural pathways into specific networks within the brain. Most importantly, it reconnects you with your life.

About TMS treatment

Depression

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an advanced technology utilizing magnetic pulses to heal treatment resistant depression (TRD). Depression is a complex and debilitating brain disorder associated with a number of changes in the nervous system’s chemistry and electrical patterns. These changes affect the body’s hormone expression and disrupt mood, energy, and cognition in ways that interfere with daily life.

Migraines

Recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) may reduce the number of migraine episodes, the severity of pain, and the duration of episodes.

With a wide range of therapies and holistic approaches to support mental wellbeing, we have the tools you need to get back to leading a healthy and balanced life.

TMS

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a safe, effective, non-invasive, non-systemic alternative to treatment resistant clinical depression. It does not require anesthesia or sedation and is not to be confused with Electroconvulsive “shock” Therapy (ECT).

Integrative Psychiatry

We know that every patient is unique, which is why we have partnered with Your Wellness Practice to offer a diverse range of mental health services with personalized care plans designed to treat you as an individual. With each encounter, we work together to fulfill our shared mission to improve the mental health and quality of life of each of our patients holistically, using current medical technologies and advanced treatments for those who can benefit from them.

Therapy

Psychotherapy can help individuals resolve  a wide array of mental health conditions  and emotional challenges. Therapy works to not only alleviate symptoms, but also to  identify and correct the psychological root  causes of one’s condition to allow for better  functioning, enhanced emotional well-  being, and true healing. Our partnering  providers specialize in a variety of  therapeutic approaches, allowing us to  connect you with the mental health professional who best suits your needs.

What is TMS?

It is a brain disorder that can challenge your ability to perform daily activities. It is also known as major depression or major depressive disorder.
Depression is not just feeling sad. In the worst case, suicide may be considered or attempted.

Symptoms

16 million people in the United States suffer from depression. Only half (8 million) seek treatment. Of those who do seek treatment, only half (4 million) receive treatment that adequately addresses their symptoms and restores functioning.

It is normal to feel sad in response to life’s challenges. However, when those feelings become overwhelming and sustained, leading to physical and cognitive symptoms and getting in the way of daily life, it could be an indication of major depression.

TMS Treatment

TMS treatment involves applying magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the part of the brain that controls your mood.

The pulses create rapid changes in the localized magnetic field, which induces a current and stimulates neurons. The result is enhanced cellular metabolism and functioning, and improvement in depressive symptoms.

TMS Treatment Protocol

The treatment protocol consists of repetitive TMS (rTMS) cycles followed by short rest intervals.
1. Our psychiatrist will complete an initial assessment to determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for the treatment. It can be helpful to have a friend or relative present for support and to provide an additional source of information.

2. If you qualify for TMS, the doctor will discuss the expected therapeutic effects and timeline for improvement, the potential side effects, and any other pertinent information.

3. The initial TMS session begins with “brain mapping,” which is the process whereby we determine the precise location for the placement of the treatment coil. We also establish the “motor threshold” which indicates the appropriate intensity of the pulse to be delivered during treatment.

4. The TMS protocol requires daily sessions (5 days per week) lasting less than 5 minutes (Express TMS) for about 7-8 weeks, for a total of 36 sessions. Treatment does not require sedation, and you are permitted to drive yourself to and from the appointments.

5. Optimally, we will redetermine the motor threshold at least one more time during the course of treatment, depending upon insurance approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a series of frequently asked questions about depression and TMS treatment.
What is depression?
Major depression is a serious medical illness that affects more than 16 million people in the US alone. Depression is more than just sadness—it affects the way a person acts and thinks. Major Depressive Disorder is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, and studies show that women are more likely than men to be diagnosed.
What are the symptoms of depression?
Feeling depressed, persistently sad, or hopeless.
Trouble concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions.
Fatigue.
Feelings of guilt or worthlessness.
Insomnia: waking up early in the morning or sleeping too much.
Irritability.
Moving or speaking slowly.
Little interest or pleasure in your usual activities.
Thoughts, plans, or attempts to harm yourself, or a wish to be dead.
What is transcranial magnetic stimulation? (TMS)
Transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy is a highly effective and novel treatment that uses precisely delivered magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain that controls mood, improving brain health and function, and addressing a variety of clinical concerns.
How does TMS Therapy work?
The therapy (TMS) uses specific repetitive magnetic field pulses similar to those used in an MRI. While awake, alert, and comfortably seated, the patient receives magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain underactive in depression.
Is TMS covered by my insurance?
Yes, most insurance providers cover TMS treatment for Major Depressive Disorder and OCD. Before treatment begins, we will verify coverage policies and review your insurance benefits with you, making sure you know the estimated cost before getting started.
Are there any side effects to TMS therapy?
A great benefit of TMS treatment is that it does not cause common unpleasant side effects experienced with many antidepressants, such as weight gain and sexual dysfunction. Some patients may experience mild discomfort during the procedure, headache, or fatigue; however, if they occur, these side effects are usually temporary and mild.
How long does it take?
Each session lasts less than 5 minutes and the number of sessions for each patient is determined by the Physician depending on the patient’s needs.
